Preparing For Spring FloodingNov 2 2009 7:18PM
KXMCTV Minot But come springtime, the stream southeast of Minot has quite a bark - and a bite. It was a problem this spring as snow melted in the hills to the west and ran off quickly, backing up and flooding some areas in the KOA Campground area. That's why the Ward County Water Resource Board has been pursuing a plan to greatly widen the coulee and make it deeper - to move water to the nearby Mouse River more quickly. But those plans have run into a roadblock at the Corps of Engineers. Water Board members say the Corps wants them to instead build what's called a high-water bypass channel alongside the existing creek - but not do any work to the creek itself. The family that owns the land that would be used for that channel argued against the plan today as the Board met. It was decided to seek a meeting with all parties - including the Corps - to come up with an acceptable plan.
