Fans react...Afghanistan move...Suspected U.S. strike

NEW YORK (AP) Hundreds of Yankees fans have been pouring into the streets of New York to celebrate the team's 27th World Series championship. That's after the Yanks beat the defending champion Philadelphia Phillies 7-3 in Game 6. In Philadelphia where cars were overturned after last year's win the streets have been quiet.

KABUL (AP) The United Nations is relocating more than half of its Afghanistan staff in the wake of last week's deadly Taliban attack. Five U.N. staffers died in the Kabul assault, seen as the most direct targeting of U.N. workers during the organization's decades of work in Afghanistan. Officials are calling the relocation temporary.

MIR ALI, Pakistan (AP) Pakistani officials report that suspected U.S. missiles have killed two alleged militants in northwest Pakistan. The strike comes as Pakistani forces continue a military offensive against Taliban fighters near the Afghan border.

Washington (AP) Officials say House Democrats are about to get a powerful ally in their Corner as they fight for their health care overhaul. Officials with knowledge of the decision say the AARP will back the legislation headed for a floor vote as early as Saturday. The seniors' lobby's endorsement was critical in pushing through Medicare prescription drug benefit through Congress in 2003.

MANAGUA, Nicaragua (AP) The U.S. National Hurricane Center is warning of flash flooding and mudslides as Tropical Storm Ida heads for mainland Nicaragua. The system has uprooted trees, knocked down power lines and forced about 300 people to evacuate on the country's Corn Island. It could become a hurricane before hitting the mainland early Thursday.
