Jurors to hear closing arguments in Rodriguez trial...Sep 20 2006 2:12AM
Associated Press Fargo, N.D. (AP) Closing arguments are scheduled this morning in the penalty phase of Alfonso Rodriguez Junior's trial, and the judge has warned lawyers about being too flamboyant. The federal jury of seven women and five men is expected to begin deliberations this afternoon on whether the 53-year-old Crookston, Minnesota, man should be sentenced to death or life in prison. A death sentence must be unanimous. Rodriguez was convicted earlier of kidnapping resulting in the death of Dru Sjodin (shuh-DEEN') of Pequot (PEE'-kwaht) Lakes, Minnesota. Defense attorneys have filed a list of 35 factors they believe favor a life sentence including Rodriguez's offer in March to plead guilty and waive all rights to appeal. The plea was rejected by the government. (Copyright 2006 by The Associated Press. All Rights Reserved.) APNP 09-20-06 0202CDT |
