House breakthrough...Suspect moved....Orlando shooting

Washington (AP) Anti-abortion holdouts are no longer holding up a vote on health care reform. Rep. Bart Stupak says he and other abortion opponents will be given a chance to insert tougher abortion restrictions into the legislation during debate. A vote could come Saturday.

FORT HOOD, Texas (AP) A military official at Fort Hood says 23 of those wounded in Thursday's mass shooting remain hospitalized, about half of them in intensive care. Meanwhile, the suspect has been moved to a military hospital in San Antonio. His neighbors say Maj. Nidal Malik Hasan cleaned out his apartment this week as if going off to war.

ORLANDO, Fla. (AP) Police in Orlando say a fired engineer opened fire at his former workplace Friday, killing one person and wounding five others. Jason Rodriguez blamed his former employer, an engineering firm, for holding up his unemployment benefits.

Rodriguez told a bankruptcy judge he has been working at a sandwich shop.

VALLEJO, Calif. (AP) Police say an Oakland, Calif. man stole a car to make a court appearance on a previous auto theft charge.

Samuel Botchvaroff, was jailed by a state trooper who says he followed a tracking system to a car stolen in Oakland. It was tracked to a courthouse in Vallejo (vuh-LAY'-hoh), where the suspect had been at an arraignment.

LOS ANGELES (AP) The Los Angeles City Council has given preliminary approval to an ordinance that would ban the declawing of cats. Council members described the procedure as unnecessary and cruel. Supporters hope to pass the ordinance before New Year's Day, when the state will begin banning cities and counties from regulating the practice of veterinary medicine.
