CLEVELAND, Texas (AP) Authorities called to check on a family's well-being in a rural southeast Texas home found the bodies of four people who had been shot to death.

San Jacinto County Sheriff James Walters said Monday it appeared that a man shot his girlfriend, her young daughter and his adopted mother before turning the gun on himself.

Walters says the bodies were found Saturday night and he did not release their identities. Walters says that the gunman "might have been off his medication." He declined to elaborate.

The house is about is about 55 miles north of Houston.
