Associated Press abortion DONOR Donor in 2006 abortion campaign to remain secret SIOUX FALLS, S.D. (AP) A judge on Monday decided in favor of State Rep. Roger Hunt of Brandon in a ruling that keeps secret the name of an anonymous donor who gave $750,000 to the 2006 abortion ban campaign in South Dakota. During the 2006 campaign, Hunt formed Promising Future Inc., which had one shareholder who made three separate $250,000 donations to Vote Yes For Life. Since then Secretary of State Chris Nelson has argued that the name should be revealed, calling Promising Future a 'shell' corporation formed to hide the identity. Caldwell had dismissed the case in August 2007. Nelson appealed to the state Supreme Court, which sent it back to Caldwell. Voters rejected the 2006 ballot issue 56 percent to 44 percent. (AP) A trial date has been set for a 41-year-old Sturgis man accused of murder in the April shooting death of Ricardo Hein in Huron. Circuit Judge Vince Foley of Brookings says the trial of John LeGrand will start April 21 with jury selection. LeGrand has pleaded not guilty to alternate counts of second-degree murder and first-degree manslaughter. Authorities say he and Hein had fought over money that LeGrand allegedly owed Hein for construction work and that LeGrand shot the 23-year-old Hein four times with a shotgun in a Huron mobile home park. A request by LeGrand's attorney, Randy Stiles of Mitchell, to add a second defense attorney was granted. Mike Rounds says he won't seek a tax increase to fix state budget problems that are expected to get much worse in the next two years. The governor says he doubts the South Dakota Legislature would increase taxes, so he is seeking to balance the state budget by searching for budget cuts. The state is using federal stimulus money to help get through the next two years. Rounds says up to $29 million in state reserves might be needed to get through the current budget year because the recession caused a decline in revenue and an increase in spending on people who lost jobs. However, Rounds says employment numbers are better than expected, so revenue should be better than expected a couple of months ago.
