Ft. Hood visit...Pondering Afghanistan...Ida watch

Washington (AP) President Barack Obama travels to Fort Hood in Texas today to meet with families of the 13 people killed in last week's shootings. He'll also talk to wounded soldiers and attend a memorial service. Meanwhile, the FBI is looking into whether it mishandled early information about the alleged gunman.

WASHINGTON (AP) Officials say President Barack Obama is zeroing in on a decision to add tens of thousands more troops to Afghanistan. They say the deployment would most likely begin in January. The goal would be boosting the defenses of 10 key Afghan cities and towns. An announcement is expected later this month.

JERUSALEM (AP) Israel's Army chief is warning that Hezbollah militants now possess tens of thousands of rockets. He adds that some of them are capable of reaching major Israeli cities, including Jerusalem and Tel Aviv.

UNDATED (AP) Forecasters aren't saying exactly when the eye of Tropical Storm Ida will come ashore on the Alabama coast. But its sheets of rain and stiff winds are making driving hazardous. Ida's storm surge could raise water levels 3 to 5 feet above normal.

Tropical storm warnings are up in Alabama, Louisiana, Mississippi, and Florida.

LAS VEGAS (AP) A 21-year-old from Michigan has become the youngest winner of the World Series of Poker main event in Las Vegas. Joe Cada (CAD'-uh) chose playing cards over college. His winnings amount to $8.55 million.
