SUPERINTENDENT-Flu DEATH Ethan superintendent succumbs to swine flu SIOUX FALLS, S.D. (AP) South Dakota's 14th reported death from swine flu was 49-year-old Terry Mathis, the superintendent of schools in Ethan.

He died Monday at a Sioux Falls hospital.

Mathis was diagnosed with cancer about two months ago. He stayed on the job until mid-October and took treatment in Sioux Falls and at the Mayo Clinic. But he recently came down with pneumonia and the flu virus, and his older brother, Bob Mathis, said the combination became unbearable.

Officials chose to continue classes at Ethan through the week, although Friday is a day off because Emery-Ethan plays Howard that afternoon in the state Class 9AA Football championship.

Authorities said the Dakotah Bank on the town's Main Street was robbed about 3:30 p.m. Tuesday and the 50-year-old woman was arrested as she left through a door into the alley.

Police said the woman is believed to be from Fort Yates, N.D.

She was taken to the Walworth County Jail in Selby to be held on second-degree robbery charges until a bond is set, Mobridge Police chief Mike Nehls said bank officials and bank employees did a "great job" and no one was hurt.

Information from: KOLY-AM BOOK PULLED Book subject of controversy in SD schools SIOUX FALLS, S.D. (AP) A cartoon anthology filled with teenage angst, four-letter words and some drug and sexual references has been pulled from the student library collections at two Sioux Falls public middle schools after a parent complaint.

A school district committee that reviewed the graphic novel unanimously agreed to restrict Ariel Schrag's "Stuck in the Middle: Seventeen Comics from an Unpleasant Age." The school board agreed.

The book is the work of 16 cartoonists who recreated true tales from their middle school years. Shrag says the cartoons could help struggling teens and preteens. She thinks it is easier to "demonize" graphic novels, which have pictures.

Teachers at Edison and Patrick Henry middle schools still will be able to access the book and use it in class.

Information from: Argus Leader, http://www.argusleader.com COURTROOM ESCAPE SD woman flees courtroom after sentencing CHAMBERLAIN, S.D. (AP) The Brule County sheriff's office is looking for a woman who fled from a Chamberlain courtroom after being sentenced to prison.

Authorities say Angelina Walters fled on Tuesday with a man who had been sitting in the gallery after being sentenced to 15 years in prison for an aggravated assault conviction. They identified the man as Tyler Nazer.

Police say the two could be in a black four-door Chevy Impala with the license plate 38G-211.

JAIL GAS LINE BREAK Gas line breaks at site of new Pierre jail PIERRE, S.D. (AP) Firefighters spent about an hour at the site of the new Hughes County Jail east of Pierre after a natural gas line broke about 40 feet from the new building.

Pierre Fire Chief Bill Alexander said contractors working in the parking lot area hit the line Tuesday afternoon while they were drilling holes for electrical light poles. The break sent natural gas into the air.

The escaping gas smelled like rotten eggs and Alexander said it made plenty of noise for a while. He said firefighters shut off the ignition sources near the break and stood by to monitor it from a distance until crews from Montana-Dakota Utilities Co. arrived.

Alexander said an auger was still in place at the site, so another hole was dug to get access to the gas line and clamp it.

Information from: KGFX-AM, http://www.dakotaradiogroup.com HOUSE-KREBS SD GOP lawmaker decides not to run for US House PIERRE, S.D. (AP) State Rep. Shantel Krebs of Renner says she has decided not to seek the Republican nomination for South Dakota's lone seat in the U.S. House.

Krebs says she will instead seek to switch from the state House to the state Senate in next year's election because the current senator in her district, Gene Abdallah of Sioux Falls, can't seek re-election because he is term-limited in the Senate.

Krebs says she wants to remain in the Legislature to work on the state's budget problems.

Democratic Rep. Stephanie Herseth Sandlin is seeking re-election to the U.S. House. Republicans who have announced their candidacies are Secretary of State Chris Nelson, state Rep. Blake Curd of Sioux Falls and political newcomer Thad Wasson of Piedmont.
