Associated Press STRIP SEARCH CLAIMS Claims filed in strip search settlement SIOUX FALLS, S.D. (AP) A judge has approved a settlement for people who were subject to strip searches as juveniles at a detention center in Sioux Falls. They'll get about $245 for each search. So far, 385 individuals have filed a claim for 745 strip searches conducted over a six-year period. The settlement comes out of a class action lawsuit against the county and applies only for juveniles taken into custody for minor offenses during the period in question. Nearly 5,000 met the criteria, but they can file a claim only if they were fully nude during the search. Hundreds who might qualify can't be located. robbery PLEAS 2 plead guilty to bank robbery SIOUX FALLS, S.D. SOYBEAN HARVEST-DRYING Dryers working OT to keep up with Soybeans ABERDEEN, S.D. (AP) Crews running dryers at area elevators are working extended shifts to keep up with farmers battling to finish a late and soggy soybean harvest. Employees at the South Dakota wheat Growers Grebner Terminal east of Aberdeen are working with the dryers and moving beans to give farmers more room to drop theirs, said grain originator Gary Van Vleet. The elevator can dry 125,000 bushels of soybeans daily, a quota that's often filled in those five hours. Wet weather this summer and fall delayed farmers from getting into their fields to harvest beans. Combines and other heavy equipment were getting mired in muck as producers took advantage of nice days to try to get beans out of the field. (AP) A government grant is helping the small northwest South Dakota town of Timber Lake upgrade from dial-up to broadband Internet access. A receiver that sits atop the Timber Lake water tower brings in the broadband signal and sends it to more than a hundred customers throughout the area. Broadband program manager Barb Gross says the service has opened doors for the town and its residents. The 2005 grant runs out this year, but the city plans to expand its service even though the $393,000 will soon be gone. With the kinks worked out of the system, the city started charging customers for the service this year. Gross says it's important that the service has become self-sustaining. The town is now looking to expand to other areas. Information from: KELO-TV, http://www.keloland.com FERAL PIG Lake County man shoots feral pig MADISON, S.D. (AP) A Lake County man this month shot a feral pig, an animal usually found in the southern United States. Chad Aker says the animal was first sighted about six weeks ago by farmers chopping Corn for silage. Aker found the pig on his property about 14 miles northwest of Madison near sunset on Nov. 2 and brought down the animal with a rifle. Floyd Demaray of Ramona, who is Aker's father-in-law, says others had seen the wild pig. One was a farmer driving home from Sunday church services about a mile from Aker's home. Feral pigs are more common in the South. Texas, Florida, Mississippi, Georgia and Louisiana, as well as California, have some of the five largest hunting areas in the nation.
