Mauer is AL MVP...White Sox land Vizquel...College hoops Polls

NEW YORK (AP) Joe Mauer was named Most Valuable Player of the American League today by the Baseball Writers. He received 27 of 28 first-place votes and 387 points to become only the second catcher in 33 years to win the award. Mark Teixeira (teh-SHEHR'-uh) and Derek Jeter of the Yankees were second and third.

CHICAGO (AP) Veteran shortstop Omar Vizquel (vihz-KEHL') has joined the Chicago White Sox. He has agreed to a one-year contract with the American League central club. Vizquel has won 11 Gold Glove awards and hit .266 with one homer and 14 RBIs in 62 games with Texas last season.

UNDATED (AP) The Kansas Jayhawks remain the No. 1 in the weekly Associated Press men's Basketball poll. They received 56 first place votes in the nationwide balloting of sportscasters and writers, with second-ranked Michigan State getting seven first-place nods. The third-ranked school this week is Texas with Villanova fourth and Kentucky fifth.

UNDATED (AP) The top team in the weekly AP women's basketball poll is Connecticut. The Huskies have been on top of the last 27 polls, including the last 18 unanimously.

RICHMOND, Texas (AP) The rain delayed LPGA Championship came to an end today in Richmond, Texas, with Anna Nordqvist (NORD'-kwist) the winner by two shots over Lorena Ochoa (lohr-AY'-nah oh-CHOH'-uh). Nordqvist shot a final-round 65 today to finish 13 under par.
