Wheaton - Tennis Pro in BismarckNov 27 2009 10:59PM
KXMBTV Bismarck from Wimbledon to Western North Dakota, as the former world ranked pro was on the courts tonight at Capital Racquet. Its not the first time the Minnesota native has been in Bismarck. For the last ten years, he's made it annual occurance, where he catches up with a few friends and hopefully, a few pheasents. "(David Wheaton:) I think there is a bit of a history now here and I enjoy coming up and I like North Dakota and a lot of people probably come here and think what a flat and open country, but I think it is beautiful and I love it here. " Terry Burke took him hunting a decade ago, and Wheaton returns to stay with the Burke's... and usually after their hunting trip, they take a tennis trip. Wheaton played professionally for 13 years, most of it in his trademark American Flag headband. He was once ranked 12th in the world.... which his friend Terry is well aware of. "(Terry Burke:) He has to play down to my level, obviously, and but it is sort of fun to come out and play and it keeps somebody my age interested in the game every year, because this way, I kind of have a sponser, y'know, a guy that comes out each year and brings me a shirt of two or three. " Among Wheaton's career highlights was winning an NCAA team title at Stanford in 1988, reaching the semifinals at Wimbledon in 1991 and winning the Grand Slam Cup that same year, which included a prize of 2-million dollars. In 2004, he won the Wimbledon 35 doubles title. These days, he hosts and produces a Christian radio talk show.
