'Clunkers' program keeps gas guzzlers on roadNov 28 2009 11:26AM
Associated Press SIOUX FALLS, S.D. (AP) A check of facts and figures shows that in South Dakota, the two biggest-selling vehicles in the Cash for Clunkers program were pickup trucks that average less than 20 miles a gallon. The Argus Leader examined the data and found that the four-wheel-drive Chevy Silverado and Ford F150 topped the list of vehicles that people got after trading in their clunkers. Nationwide, Toyota CoRollas and Honda Civics were the most popular in the program that was designed to jump-start the nation's economy and take gas-guzzling vehicles off the road. Nationwide, more than 670,000 new vehicles with an average gas mileage rating of 24.9 miles per gallon were bought under the program. In South Dakota, almost half of the vehicles purchased were trucks, sport utility vehicles or vans. And the mileage rating was only 23.5 miles per gallon.
