Oklahoma's Hand out for season with knee injury

Eds: APNewsNow.

NORMAN, Okla. (AP) Oklahoma starting guard Whitney Hand will miss the rest of the Basketball season with a torn anterior cruciate ligament in her right knee.

Hand suffered the injury Friday during the first half of a win over San Diego State in the Paradise Jam in the U.S. Virgin Islands. She underwent an MRI on Monday morning that revealed the extent of the injury.

Oklahoma coach Sherri Coale says the school will pursue a medical hardship waiver in an attempt to preserve Hand's eligibility. The sophomore from Fort Worth, Texas, played in five games this season and was the Sooners' second-leading scorer, averaging 13.4 points.

Hand was the Big 12 freshman of the year last season as the Sooners reached the Final Four.

Hand's injury leaves No. 18 Oklahoma (4-2) with only nine players on its roster.
