Local Response to Latest Toyota RecallFeb 9 2010 7:08PM
KXMBTV Bismarck Today, Toyota announces the recall of the world's number one selling hybrid car, the Toyota Prius, after concerns over the electronic breaking system. Reporter Kate Schell talks the area's only Toyota dealership and gets their take on the newest announcement. (Justin Theel/Cedric Theel Toyota, G.M.) "This has been wildly blown out of proportion." For the third time in just six months Toyota announces another recall....this time after concerns with the electronic braking system in their Prius hybrids (Justin Theel/Cedric Theel Toyota, G.M.) "You know its being portrayed as the cars are unsafe. Completely false, these are very, very, very minor occurrences. In fact we have seen statistics where you are better off getting struck by lightening than having a problem with the vehicle you are driving." The company has voluntarily recalled 2010 Pruises. Toyota says the recalled car will need the software that, oversees the controls of the antilock brakes, updated (Justin Theel/Cedric Theel Toyota, G.M.) "The technology on these cars is unbelievable. So its not something you can go tighten up a bolt anymore or tighten up a cable and take the problem away, its got a lot more to do with it. Its all electronics. So what they do is go in and flash the computer, update it, put new software in it, just like you would your normal computer at home." Theel says Toyota has always been a company that prides themselves on perfection. He says these voluntary recalls are giving the company time to correct any issues, so they can emerge as an even better franchise than they were before. (Justin Theel/Cedric Theel Toyota, G.M.) "The way Toyota is handling it is second to none. They've always told us as dealers, they always said our main objective is the customer. The customer comes first. the dealer comes second. the company comes third. its very evident what they are doing right now, by stopping production and by stopping sales on certain units, they are proving that right now." For Cedric Theel Toytoa-the recalls have had very little impact. Justin Theel says sales have remained steady all month (Justin Theel/Cedric Theel Toyota, G.M.) "There are still going to drive Toyotas. They know how Toyotas are build. They know why they bought them in the first place. They havent had a problem since they bought them, they've been well taken care of by Toyota, these people arent going anywhere." In an email sent to Cedric Theel Toyota, the company's President Akio Toyoda says "Toyota has not lived up to the high standards we've set for ourselves"....and that he is taking "personal responsibility" and leading "the effort to restore trust in our word and in our products." With KX News, Im Kate Schell Besides the 2010 Prius, the Prius P-H-V, the Lexus HS250h, and the SAI are being recalled.
