Student Battles Cancer

High school can be challenging for many students. It's at that time, teenagers are faced with the task of managing many things at once like time spent with their friends and on their studies.

Tonight reporter Kate Schell introduces us to one student who is juggling that and much more.

She says it without missing a beat

10:17-10:19 (Kayla Hillestad/Battling cancer, age 16) "Alveolar Rhabdomyosarcoma" Two words that many people would struggle to pronounce...let alone understand

But for Kayla Hillestad, they're words she knows all too well. 11:45-11:51 (Kayla Hillestad/Battling cancer, age 16) "They told me I had a 14-percent chance to live and it was really scary." Kayla was diagnosed on September 6th, 2007with an aggressive form of cancer that attacks her soft tissues. After having discovered a large lump on her back, Kayla saw a doctor

12:40-12:45 (Kayla Hillestad/Battling cancer, age 16) "He sent up an appointment for me to go to Minneapolis that same night." 13:58-14:19 (Kayla Hillestad/Battling cancer, age 16) "I woke up and had a port and everything. I didnt even know. They just stared right away. It was very aggressive treatment too. I was sick a lot. I lost a lot of weight and then I ended up getting a feeding tube and everything. It was bad." After months of intense therapy, Kayla was in remission

15:59-16:07 (Kayla Hillestad/Battling cancer, age 16) "I was really happy, I was like yay because I am alive and I made it through and not a lot of people can do that." But remission only lasted year. On Friday the 13th of this past November, just days before her birthday, Kayla was told the cancer was back

13:06-13:12 (Kayla Hillestad/Battling cancer, age 16) "I was sad. I was really sad. I wasn't mad or anything, I was just sad." Unlike the first time she had cancer, Kayla is now able to attend school...even though her parents thought she should consider getting her G.E.D instead

23:30 (Kayla Hillestad/Battling cancer, age 16) "They didnt know what was going to happen in the future too, but I thought about it for like a week that I just like being social and being here." Because she's still undergoing treatment, Kayla has a modified schedule at school to keep her from becoming too rundown. Seeing her friends a school helps keep her spirits high

21:21-:21:27 (Kayla Hillestad/Battling cancer, age 16) "My body responds a lot better if I am positive." That was evident, the last time they scanned for cancer

17:53-18:06 (Kayla Hillestad/Battling cancer, age 16) "They said it was gone, but I still have to do treatments for another, until May and then they will do more scans and they are going to see how I am doing." And having already beaten it one time, Kayla's confident she'll do it again. With KX News, I'm Kate Schell

There will be a benefit this Sunday at 2pm at Horizon Middle School for Kayla and her family. The Gefroh Brothers will be performing. Freewill offerings will be taken. watch the video | save this article / add to your favorites list
