Prosecutors say Rodriguez jury made proper decision...Oct 18 2006 8:30PM
Associated Press Fargo, N.D. (AP) Prosecutors say jurors in the Alfonso Rodriguez Junior case took the proper steps before handing down a death sentence. A federal jury convicted Rodriguez of kidnapping resulting in the death of University of North Dakota student Dru Sjodin (shuh-DEEN'). The same jury voted unanimously for the death penalty. The government filed its response today to a motion by defense attorneys asking the judge to give Rodriguez a sentence of life in prison without parole. Prosecutors say the jury properly weighed the factors that favored the death penalty against those that called for life in prison. U-S Attorney Drew Wrigley says he expects several other defense motions protesting the outcome of the case. A sentencing hearing has been set for January fifth.
