Conjoined twins head into surgeryJan 3 2007 1:06PM
KXMBTV Bismarck It's an important day for two little girls from Bismarck. Abygail and Madysen Fitterer are at Saint Mary's Hospital, part of the Mayo Clinic in Rochester, Minnesota. Lauren Kalberer is there to bring us the latest on this story. Lauren... (Lauren Kalberer/KX News):"Hi, Tracie. This is the day Stacy, Suzy and brother Nick Fitterer have been waiting five months for. And for the family, I'm sure it's been five very long months. The good news, and the latest update that I have, is that Abygail and Madysen went into surgery at 9:50. That's when the first incision was made. So, from here, doctors are proceeding to separate the chest walls, which is actually how the twins are connected. They share the anterior chest wall. The doctor leading the surgery is absolutely no stranger to these kinds of surgeries. Doctor Christopher Moir is the same surgeon that separated the Carlsen twins a while back. In the Carlsen twins' case, they went into surgery at 8:40 in the morning, and they were sleeping in separate cribs by 4:45. So hopefully that's the case today. Hopefully things go smoothly. They're calling a press conference at 5:00, which I will be attending. And hopefully by then, the girls will be separated, and there'll be more good news to report."
