Interesting story about the highest paid state employees over on the KX website. Here are a couple cuts:(Sen. Carolyn Nelson/ D- Fargo (http://www.kxmc.com/t/fargo-nd)) I am not saying that some of these guys are not worth what we they are paying them. Problem we have is we are not paying some of the people underneath them what they should be getting paid. (Sen. Dave O' Connell/ D-Lansford (http://www.kxmc.com/t/lansford-nd)) Theres getting to be be to big of a gap. I have nothing wrong with meeting the going wages if you have to compete in the region. But what I am having trouble with is the person that is on the bottom of the pay scale.[ ] [From a comment posted at the end by the KX reporter..] Sandy Blunt - CEO, WSI $158,028 (By the way there is someone at WSI making more than him.) Cory Fong, State Tax Commissioner $79,845 Wayne Stenehjem, Attorney General $79,983.96 Dr. Wayne Sanstead, Public Instruction $83,748 KXMC (http://www.kxmc.com/getARticle.asp?ArticleId=93768) (Watch the whole video over there.)I'm curious who it is at North Dakota WSI that's making more than Blunt. We don't pay our Governor or our Attorney General enough. I don't care that those offices are currently held by Republicans. We'd get more talent available for and interested in those offices if the salary was commensurate with the amount of crap I give them. And, if he didn't have to work a second job, the Governor could be more available to participate in the legislative session (index.php?option=com_content task=view id=589 Itemid=159). | save this article / add to your favorites list

Posted by Huh? on May 25 2007 10:13PM - You talk about the "gap" in wages for State employees. Why is it that the CEO of WSI is making $158,000 a year, and some of the secretaries that work for the state (the ones doing all the work of the overpaid) are not even making $10/hour and they have been working for the state for over 15 years?

The State of ND needs a damn good overhaul on their wages and start paying some of the lower people what they are truly worth!!!

Posted by MadManMe on May 28 2007 2:01PM - Boy is this a good one. The top dogs do not need to make that much money. If you can not live on $80,000 a year you need to rethink your priorities. What do these people do that they "earn" this much? I say that no one in management should make more than $5 an hour more than the employees doing ALL of the WORK!!!

If a secretary is making $10/hr then the head of the department shold not make more than $15/hr. Let's see $158,000 comes out to $79/hr based on a 2,000 hour work year. Holy Canoly BATMAN no one is worth $79/hr. What does this person do that makes them worth over 8 times the secretary?? This is utterly unbelievable.

Why do our legislators continue to allow this gross abuse happen? We all know that department heads do very little. Heck I bet most of them could not do the job of one secretary!!

Posted by Huh? on May 28 2007 4:37PM - MMM....most of the high paid executives can't even make a pot of coffee. Their secretaries have to do it for them.

Why would our legislators do anything about the wages when they raise their own all the time? You know those idiots are not gonna do a damn thing that the general public might want.

Posted by Getreal on May 30 2007 9:21AM - Are you people kidding me? Obviously you've never put in the time and money to get an education and work your way up to a management position, otherwise you wouldn't make such a stupid comment. There are ALOT of people worth $79/hr and more. Of course the CEO and top dogs should get more than the secretaries and the people who work under them. GET REAL! If you don't like it, go back to school and educate yourself so that you can also be rewarded for your hard work. Secretaries do alot, but they certainly don't do more than the CEO's. And, I'm willing to bet they have alot less stress.

Posted by Huh? on May 30 2007 2:51PM - Getreal....The education??? Oh give me a break!!! I used to work for the State of ND and I know SEVERAL state employees working in upper management makin the "too big bucks" that have NEVER spent one singel day in college!!!

I have a very good education myself, and was a secretary for many years so I know what the secretaries do for their bosses, and many of them DO more than the boss actually does, and they sometimes have more stress than the boss does because he lays alot of stress on a secretary.

Any other questions about state workers?

Posted by MadManMe on May 30 2007 3:56PM - So you feel that the best use of your tax dollars are to pay people $79/hr? Tell me what could someone possibly do that they would earn that much? I can not think of anything a person could do to earn it. I would not even pay that much for services at the Bunny Ranch!!!

Posted by MadManMe on Jun 3 2007 12:31PM - Getreal must have headed to the Bunny Ranch to see what $79 would get them....

Posted by Josh Velo of Williston, ND on Sep 1 2007 8:24AM - I tell you what... the oil workers of north dakota bust their tail every day to keep the oil flowing to keep some of these people that we elect paid, and they make what these guys in office make.... but they know what it feels like to have their back hurt, and how their knuckles feel after the iron has beat them down for a week straight. I believe that North Dakota is in for a raise for every worker that has put their time into their job. come on senators, and commissioners... hell, anyone with a title... SHARE THE WEALTH.

Posted by Dwight Messner on Sep 14 2007 8:20PM - The city of Grand Forks is now recruiting a Superintendent of Public Schools, the annual pay is $165,000. Something is out of kilter when the average pay for a superintendent is 73,000. It seems that the money could be better spent on other expenses within the school district.

Posted by Higher wages on Nov 7 2007 12:04PM - I have heard many men state that it is only a 2nd income for the family. Meaning that it isn't important role in the daily household living. I work 40 hours a week and very hard at that. I except to be paid what anouther 40 hour hard worker is being paid, 2nd income or not. Most men would never take a the jobs women are working to make what little they get paid. All jobs are important and should be treated as such.
