Cost of Alfonso Rodriguez Jr. trial

Court officials say the bill for jailing and defending Alfonso Rodriguez Junior in his federal death penalty case has totaled more than one-point-two million dollars.

The defense bill includes $934,885 in attorney fees... $231,196 in investigative and expert services... and $41,823 in travel expenses.

The figures don't include legal or travel expenses for a February 8th hearing in which Judge Ralph Erickson ordered the 54-year-old Rodriguez to die by lethal injection.

Rodriguez was convicted last year and sentenced to die for kidnapping and killing the 22-year-old Sjodin.

She was a University of North Dakota student from Pequot Lakes, Minnesota.

Rodriguez's stay in the Cass County Jail has cost more than $90,000.

U.S. Attorney Drew Wrigley says there is no formal tally for prosecuting cases.

The government spent at least $136,000 to pay bills for psychiatrists and state experts. watch the video | save this article / add to your favorites list

I think the little man should have been put to death long ago.He is not worth tax payers money. We have to pay our way in this world. Just think of how many students that could of got funding for school. This money should be going to younger people instead of criminals. The government is always cutting funding for medical, roads, schooling etc. And to use that much for a criminal is just not right. He should of been put to rest as soon as he was arrested. Why waste dollars on him. 1.2 million dollars is lot of money.

Posted by roland on Feb 27 2007 3:47PM - Innocent until proven guilty? Hey, I'm all for it. I think we live in a country that has the best justice system in the world but it's far from perfect. This scumbag just put on death row will have more years added on for chances of appeal at the expense of tax payers after he's been convicted. And let's not forget Dru Sjodin. This same scumbag snuffed her life in the most evil way. I think we should skip the appeals process and get rid of him asap so we can all go on with our lives without him.

Posted by La on Mar 3 2007 2:06PM - This man is guilty. He looks like a monster, there is no life left in his eyes. Why should he be protected and fed three times a day when he took the life of a beautiful girl away from her and her family. The money going into the case could be spent in way better ways. Build a dorm or frat house in rememberance of her or even fix a road. This is a day in age when criminals are not afraid of the punishments because they know they can appeal and spend the rest of their lives doing so in a compfortable cozy cell getting three meals a day.

Posted by Barb on Apr 9 2007 2:08PM - This personand he's not a man, that's for surehas forfeited his right to protection. If "an eye for an eye" were still the rule of law, he would curse the day he was born. And what's up with his sick mother? How could she not know what he was doing? No, he killed and raped Dru because he couldn't do it to his mother. He's a sick person who will never be changed and the sooner he's executed the better off society will be. These people are beyond repair and what they do to others is deliberate, so we should be just as deliberate and show that we care more about the rights of the dead or brutalized victims than we do about the killers who have years to savor their memories.

Posted by rebecca on Jul 19 2007 10:02PM - I was a juror on that case. It was by far the hardest thing I have ever done. We all did the right thing and followed all of the rules of the court while we were in the courts and while we were out of the courts. Noone will ever understand why he did what he did. There are so many comments that I would like to make but don't know if I even can. I have to live with this decision for the rest of my life. My kids will be proud of me but they also have to see me cry for no reason, walk the halls because after 9 months I still cant sleep, hear my restless sleep as I envision someone after my daughters. I can NEVER imagine what the amazing and courageous family of Dru Sjodin are going through by losing the most beautiful and brave woman I had the priveledge of knowing. Please keep them in your prayers EVERY DAY and lets not let Drus sincerity fade just because of what he did to her. Lets not also forget that there are two families here no matter what anger you hold for him, it is not his families fault. BOTH families searched for Dru...
