Housing Authority Reacts to StudyJan 12 2009 9:37PM
KXMCTV Minot Home prices are increasing faster than our state's wages, making it harder for you to afford a home. The rising prices are not only hindering the buyers' market, rentors are feeling the effects as well. The Minot Housing Authority is an organization that provides housing assistance to low income families in the area. They report less than a one percent vacancy for housing in the Magic City, and that number continues to drop. Housing Authority representatives say increasing rent is making it hard for people in their program to improve their situation, and they believe change is the only remedy. (Mark Austin, Minot Housing Authority) "Due to the lack of housing, we are currently assisting 740 people. There are 60 people that have been determined eligible with a voucher in-hand, out searching for a suitable unit, however, just cannot find a suitable unit at this time." (Tom Pearson, Exec. Dir. - Minot Housing Authority) "What'll help is of course, there be more development of affordable housing units in our community, which it's been awhile since something like that has taken place." Austin and Pearson say they are hoping to receive some help from state legislators during the current session, which could result in several new housing options for people in the community.
