ND Vets Home construction gets approvalFeb 26 2009 1:26PM
Associated Press Bismarck, N.D. (AP) The Legislature has endorsed a proposal to build a new North Dakota Veterans Home in Lisbon. Now the bill goes to Gov. John Hoeven. Representatives voted 91-1 to spend $31.7 million on the home. The price tag includes almost $15 million in federal aid. Supporters say the paperwork must go to the federal Veterans Administration by March 1 to avoid losing the federal money. New Salem Rep. Gary Kreidt says the new home will have 150 beds, most in private rooms. The existing home is more than 50 years old, and it has been cited for health and safety problems. The project's expected cost has risen by more than 60 percent over two years. Many lawmakers say they're annoyed it was rushed through. Fargo Rep. Rick Berg voted for the project, but he says he did so under protest. The bill is SB2025. (Copyright 2009 by The Associated Press. All Rights Reserved.) APNP 02-26-09 1315CST |
