Here is the latest Montana news from The Associated Press...Apr 20 2009 4:27PM
Associated Press HELENA, Mont. (AP) Gov. Brian Schweitzer is vetoing a bill that would allow teenage drivers to be charged as adults when vehicular homicide is alleged. Schweitzer says he doesn't like the idea of charging those under 18 as adults for a crime that may result from negligence rather than intent. He says young people charged with such crimes have made bad decisions but may not be bad kids, and rehabilitation rather than imprisonment with adults may be best. HELENA, Mont. (AP) Lawmakers entering the final week of the 2009 legislative session were no closer to agreeing on a state budget today. Democrats and Republicans hashing out very different spending plans that emerged from the House and Senate didn't even try to reach a compromise. Lawmakers hope to wrap up their work before week's end, but have until next Monday before they reach their 90th legislative day and must adjourn. LEWISTOWN, Mont. (AP) The Petroleum County coroner says a 35-year-old woman from Winnett died of injuries suffered in a one-vehicle rollover east of Winnett. The coroner says Tasha J. Keith was injured at about 3 a.m. on Sunday, and died that morning at Central Montana Medical Center in Lewistown. The crash happened on Montana 200 about 3 1/2 miles east of Winnett. The ongoing investigation includes the Montana Highway Patrol. SHERIDAN, Mont. (AP) Retired University of Montana philosophy professor Richard Gotshalk, who suffered a debilitating illness and advocated "responsible dying," has died at his home in Sheridan. Gotshalk's partner, Doris Fischer, says he had declined food and water. Gotshalk suffered ALS (amyotrophic lateral sclerosis), which also is known as Lou Gehrig's disease. The University of Montana, from which he retired, confirms that he died on Thursday. He was 77. Information from: Missoulian, http://www.missoulian.com (Copyright 2009 by The Associated Press.
