YANKTON, S.D. (AP) An aging stretch of state highway near Yankton is being rebuilt as road construction season gets going for another year.

Contractors have started work on the reconstruction of the eastbound lanes of Highway 50 from Yankton to just east of Gayville. The $11.3 million project is expected to be done by late fall.

The highway was first built in 1938, and officials say the eastbound stretch is long overdue for reconstruction.

The state Transportation Department says the old road doesn't have shoulders, which is not good for motorists who have car problems.
