Associated Press FORCED CHEMO NEW: Sheriff: Boy who fled chemo returns to Minnesota NEW ULM, Minn. (AP) A woman and her 13-year-old son who were on the run from court-ordered cancer treatment for the boy returned to Minnesota early Monday voluntarily. Brown County Sheriff Rich Hoffmann says Colleen Hauser and her son, Daniel, arrived in New Ulm at 3 a.m. by charter flight. The sheriff did not say where the pair has been or whether Daniel received medical treatment for his Hodgkin's lymphoma while they were gone. Hoffmann says because Colleen Hauser returned voluntarily, a warrant for her arrest was lifted. Daniel Hauser saw a doctor in the Twin Cities on Monday. A court hearing on his custody could happen as soon as Tuesday. Daniel was left with his parents for now. Information from: Star Tribune, http://www.startribune.com HISTORICAL SOCIETY-CUTS Minn. Historical Society cuts less than feared ST. PAUL, Minn. (AP) The Minnesota Historical Society says it's planning for an 8.6 percent cut in its budget, much less than the 15 percent cut it feared a month ago. Historical Society director Nina Archabal says the cuts will not be as drastic as the earlier plan, but there will still be layoffs. Archabal says she does not yet know how many people will be let go. The three historical sites slated for closure will now remain open with limited hours. The cuts will come even though the society will receive $20 million from a new sales tax created by the so-called "legacy amendment" to fund environmental and arts programs. However, Archabal says the Historical Society is still waiting to see what Gov. Pawlenty will cut using his executive authority, which could change its budget again. (AP) St. Paul police have made an arrest that may lead to the return of a gold necklace given to a woman 66 years ago when her husband returned from World War II. The 14-karat necklace was stolen Friday from 95-year-old Vivian Clausen. She says a man put his arm around her and said, "Hi, grandma," then jerked it off of her. Surveillance video captured the man running off. On Sunday, police told her they had arrested a man at a Wal-Mart in St. Paul's Midway neighborhood who might be the one who robbed her. A police spokesman says officers are still looking for the stolen necklace. Clausen is waiting for its return. In the meantime she says she'd like to meet the man who stole it. Then, she says, "He'd be a sorry man." Jonathan Papelbon survived a two-out, two-run homer in the ninth by pinch-hitter Joe Mauer to get his 12th save. Michael Cuddyer homered early for Minnesota, but Brad Penny (5-1) pitched into the sixth for his third straight victory. Francisco Liriano (2-6) struck out seven in four innings for Minnesota, including three straight to finish the second after the Red Sox put runners on second and third. But he was done in, again, by the big inning after the White Sox hit him with a seven-run fourth last week in Chicago. (Copyright 2009 by The Associated Press. All Rights Reserved.)
