There are hundreds of breeds of cattle, but there wasn't as many choices 50 years ago.

Ag Reporter Sarah Gustin introduces us to one of the 1st ranchers raising white cattle in North Dakota.

Breeding his Hereford cows to a 7/8th Charolais bull

(Sarah Gustin / KX News) "Starting with a 7/8th bull it took Doll about 13 years to build up a herd of purebred charolais cows. It took 5 generations of breeding until Doll's cows were recognized as purebreds

(Joe Doll / Charolais Producer) "1/2, 3/4, 7/8, 15/16, and 1/32. Then they were recognized as purebreds and they were still 1/32 off, but they did recognize them." Now he and his three sons have about 300 purebred cows walking the pasture

(Joe Doll / Charolais Producer) "Well, I would say they are one of the most disease free cattle for the simple reason, I have never had a pink eye problem, no prolapses and they were just to me tougher cattle." Through the ups and downs of the breed Doll has stuck with it

When you ask him why 1/2 a century with no change? You get a firm answer
