KXMBTV Bismarck In this months edition of Inside History, the tale of one Lt's death from 1863. It happened in what is now south Bismarck. The death of Lt. Frederick Beever in 1863 near Bismarck made the cover of Harpers Weekly Beever served under the command of General Sibley. Another man was killed in the scuffle One of the aides and a private of company K of the 6th regiment was killed and scalped. The Lt. was not scalped but his whiskers were taken in place of the scalp. His hair was so short they thought it was no use to try and get any of it. Tis said that he had 2000 dollars on his belt. Beever was a graduate of Oxfordhis family was well connected politically. He was buried with full masonic honors July 31st of that year The burial site is hidden off of what is now Sibley Driveunmarked from the road. If you come down here you can still see these markers. Beever is gone however Miller is believed to be still here if not this exact spot someplace in the vecinity. What were the men doing here in 1863? General Sibley led over 1-thousand men across plains like this during the summer of 1863 trying to engage the Dakota...the reason? The Civic War there was a real thought that confederate sympathisers were stirring up the plains indians to basically create war on the US government. Halvorson says Sibley's men were only in the area for a few days before returning to Minnesota. Halvorson says there are many civil war connections to North Dakota. He says for starters you can visit the Killdeer moutnain battle sightand the Whitestone battle site near Kulm. And he says to learn even moreyou can also follow the Sibley and Sully campaigns across the state.
