Gov't: Man tried to steal 130M credit card numbersAug 17 2009 2:42PM
Associated Press By DEVLIN BARRETT Associated Press Writer Washington (AP) Federal prosecutors have charged a Miami man with conspiring to pull off the largest case of credit and debit card data theft ever in the United States. Federal prosecutors in New Jersey say 28-year-old Albert Gonzales, known online as "soupnazi," was charged in a two-count indictment with conspiring to engage in wire fraud in a bid to steal 130 million card numbers. Authorities say Gonzales targeted customers of convenience store giant 7-Eleven Inc. and supermarket chain Hannaford Brothers Co. Inc. Gonzales is already in federal custody awaiting trial in New York for allegedly helping hack into a different computer network. He faces up to 20 years in prison if convicted of the new charges.
