Crops look good but running late, with low pricesSep 6 2009 2:35PM
Associated Press But farmers' joy at the good-looking wheat is dampened by low prices. South Central Grain elevator manager Jeff Mehl says the prices are ranging from less than four dollars a bushel to about $4.50 a bushel. He says that's terrible, but producers are selling anyway, because the bins are full. Jim Bobb is the division manager for the Southwest Grain company. He says it's the largest crop he's seen in 27 years of working for the company. Bobb says the railroad has been supplying cars but the amount of grain is more than the elevators were built to handle. Beach Co-op Grain Company general manager Paul Lautenschlager says the prices are below the cost of production. Flasher farmer Mike Fleck has been combining a great wheat crop, but has to cope with low prices. He says, "it was real fun, until I got to the elevator." (Copyright 2009 by The Associated Press.
