Women's Shooting TrainingSep 12 2009 7:06PM
KXMCTV Minot Part of that is due to training sessions like the one held today near Minot. The Souris River Basin Longbeards are a group associated with the National Wild Turkey Federation. For the third year in a row, their Women in the Outdoors Shooting Event has given area females the opportunity to learn more about weapons like shotguns, handguns, and bows. The morning was filled with practice sessions for each piece of equipment, and participants took part in friendly competitions throughout the afternoon. Longbeards member, Percy Ottmar, says their main goal is to continue the hunting tradition, and this is a great way to do so. (Percy Ottmar, Souris River Basin Longbeards) "We'd like to at least familiarize them with the equipment and what goes into this, and then they can make a choice for themselves whether they want to actually go into the field and start hunting live game. Some of them are encouraged by their husbands or boyfriends and so we just want to make it available." Ottmar says just over a dozen women attended today's event, which was a decrease from last year's numbers. He believes that had a lot to do with today's rainy weather.
