Fed. officers seize undeclared $62K at ND borderSep 14 2009 6:33PM
Associated Press Pembina, N.D. (AP) U.S. Customs and Border Protection officers seized more than $62,000 from a man who failed to declare all the currency he was carrying as he entered the United States at Pembina. A news release issued Monday says the incident occurred Friday. The unidentified man was assessed a monetary penalty and the rest was returned to him. A spokesman declined to say how much the penalty was. Federal law requires that anyone entering or leaving the United States must report any currency, travelers' checks, money orders or other "monetary instrument" valued at or above $10,000 to Customs and Border Protection. It is not a crime to carry more than $10,000, but it is a federal offense not to declare it. (Copyright 2009 by The Associated Press. All Rights Reserved.) APNP 09-14-09 1819CDT |
