First cattle anthrax case reported in NDSep 16 2009 6:54PM
Associated Press Bismarck, N.D. (AP) Cattle have tested positive for anthrax in southwestern North Dakota, the first case in the state this year. State Veterinarian Susan Keller says the case was reported along the Hettinger-Slope County line. She says it's the first confirmed case in that region in several years. Anthrax usually appears in very wet or very dry conditions, when dormant bacteria spores in the soil are disturbed. Animals that consume the spores are exposed to the disease. Keller says ranchers who find dead livestock should consult their veterinarians before disposing of the carcasses. Keller says more than 500 confirmed animal deaths from anthrax were reported in North Dakota during an outbreak in 2005. (Copyright 2009 by The Associated Press. All Rights Reserved.)
