EMERY, S.D. (AP) Two brothers face charges after Hanson County authorities rescued eight horses, three dogs and three rabbits from the Backes acreage in southeast South Dakota. Sheriff Mark Kessler used a Taser to subdue Kenneth and Johnny Backes, who allegedly were interfering with the work of staff from the 2nd Chance Rescue Center.

BONESTEEL, S.D. (AP) The South Dakota Highway Patrol has identified a man killed in a crash in south-central South Dakota.

Authorities say 32-year-old Randell Quilt of Lower Brule was driving on U.S. Highway 18 near Bonesteel when his car crossed the center line and collided head-on with a semi. The semi driver wasn't hurt.

Fort Yates, N.D. (AP) Sitting Bull College is dedicating a new student support center and library with a special ceremony for a headdress said to belong to the Sioux chief for whom the college is named. Standing Rock Sioux Chairman Ron His Horse Is Thunder says the eagle-feather bonnet belonged to the late Chief Sitting Bull.

His Horse Is Thunder donated it to Sitting Bull College when he was its president.

CUSTER, S.D. (AP) Two hiking trails to Harney Peak in the Black Hills will be closed for much of the winter because of logging and other timber removal being done to deal with an outbreak of mountain pine beetles. The Little Devil's Tower Trail 4 was closed on Sept. 15. Sylvan Lake Trail 9 will close on Oct. 1.
