E-CigsSep 21 2009 6:55PM
KXMBTV Bismarck Our Amber Schatz shows us why one man is continuing to smoke... in order to stop. "It's always a bad day to quit, it's the worst day ever when you quit He started smoking at 14... Then quit... Then started back up when he was 18 in the marine corps And during 8 years of pretty much solid smoking, Travis Weightman has tried to quit a few times more, using the gum, or cold turkey (Travis Weightman/Trying to Quit) "I liked it too much to just not smoke anymore, I'm a flavor man." Now he's still getting the flavor he craves... with an e-cigarette It looks just like a regular cigarette... But according to the product... doesn't have the unhealthy carcinogens found in regular cigarettes... only the amount of nicotine needed... to wean off of it (Travis) "If it's perfectly healthy and it tastes good, that's all I really need help, quit, I still have my flavor with none of the bad stuff inside." (Dr. Eric Thompson/Medcenter Family Practice Doctor) "E-cigarettes are manufactured as more pure alternative to the cigarettes without all the carcinogens and cancer-causing agents, but you still have nicotine which is the addictive substance." The FDA has not yet approved e-cigarettes... and warns against possible dangers Dr. Thompson says they are "potentially" a good option for quitting, if used correctly... but says there needs to be more research (Thompson ) "The hook is it's more healthy than smoking, are you just going to trade this for that, is it healthier for you? jury's still out." (Travis) "There's going to be side effects with real smoke, everybody knows nicotine sickness, if you smoke too much, got cancer, I'm sure this thing is not going to cause me cancer." His health is just one reason Travis wants to quit... The others... money... and the future (Travis ) "Oh yah I want to quit, I have a little one on the way, I don't smoke around other people's kids, so I don't want to smoke around my own kid." In the meantime... he's had to get used to lighting his cigarette a different way (NATS "When it turns green, it's ready) And... counting his puffs, to know when he's done ( "That's one") Also, fitting in socially with other smokers.. (Travis) "When I first started looking at it, it's like I didn't want to smoke that in front of my friends, but when I did they actually thought it was really cool, and I let them try it out." Trial and error may be the only way to determine whether this really is the cigarette of the future (Thompson) "You'll probably do pretty well to quit as long as you're motivated... the danger is with nicotine, it may be just as addicting." (Travis) "If you use this constantly for a good week, and then actually try and have a cigarette, you probably won't like the taste of cigarettes anymore, I didn't I thought it was too ashy." Amber Schatz, KX News. While many people like Travis are sold on the 100 dollar e-cigarette kit... Some critics argue that the flavors that come along with e-cigarettes may appeal to younger people... and that there just hasn't been enough research.
