Burglar who stole underwear gets prison time

DILLON, Mont. (AP) A 35-year-old man accused of breaking into homes in the Dillon area and stealing women's underwear has been sentenced to 20 years in prison with 10 years suspended.

Daniel Detonancour had pleaded guilty to two counts of felony burglary and two counts of misdemeanor theft for breaking into two homes and stealing women's undergarments. He also stole underwear from a Dillon department store.

District Judge Loren Tucker did not follow a plea agreement yesterday (Tuesday) that called for a 20-year sentence with 14 years suspended. She said the stiff sentence was warranted because Detonancour had taken away the sense that the victims could live without voyeurism.

The sentence came after testimony by one of the two women whose house was broken into last September. She said having Detonancour steal her clothing mere inches from her while she slept was scary and degrading.
