School district sets rules for mediaSep 30 2009 12:50PM
Associated Press BRECKENRIDGE, Minn. (AP) A western Minnesota school district has new rules for media coverage of board meetings rules some broadcasters say are too restrictive. The Breckenridge School Board adjourned a recent meeting when a television reporter tried to place a microphone in front the superintendent and board members. What followed was a new set of rules for reporters. Superintendent Warren Schmidt says no recording equipment will be allowed on the table in front of the board and all cameras must stay in the back of the room. Reporters also have to let the district know at least three hours in advance of any meeting they plan to cover. Television news directors in Fargo-Moorhead, N.D., say the rules work against the spirit of the state's open meetings law. WDAY-TV news director Jeff Nelson says the matter has been turned over to the station's legal counsel. Information from: The Forum, http://www.in-forum.com (Copyright 2009 by The Associated Press.
