Grain Price DiscountsOct 5 2009 7:17PM
KXMCTV Minot With such a large crop around the country, grain buyers are heavily discounting grain for things like low protein and high moisture. Locally many farmers are losing a dollar or more per bushel when they take their grain to the elevator because of the protein discounts. Greg Simonson farms near Glenburn. He says the only grain he's selling right now is the acres he contracted out last fall. Simonson says the final price they get after the discount on an already low price doesn't even cover the cost to raise the crop. (Greg Simonson, Farmer) Pay for the high price fertilizer and the chemicals, they stayed pretty even this spring but then there was some high price diesel we locked in last spring. Yeah it just doesn't cover all the expenses. Simonson says most farmers are trying to store everything they can hoping for higher prices down the road. But that means taking more loans out to cover costs in the meantime. (Greg Simonson, Farmer) Taking a loan on their wheat and especially the barley taking a loan on it and riding it out from there in case it turns around February, March in there sometime. Elevators managers we talked with said the discounts are being passed down from the big grain buyers. And the discounts are a message saying they simply don't want any more grain at this time.
