Police confirm death of teacher; memorial tonightOct 11 2009 5:51PM
Associated Press The bus was taking about 54 students home to American Fork, Utah, after a band competition. Idaho state police say a preliminary investigation shows the bus driver had a medical condition that caused the crash. The band's director says he was told that woodwind instructor Heather Christensen noticed the driver had slumped over and jumped up to grab the wheel. He says her actions probably kept yesterday's crash from being worse. Authorities say two students were taken to the hospital by helicopter, and another 12 by ambulance. Another 30 students were treated for minor injuries. Two students who were held at the hospital overnight have been released. A third girl is expected to be released either today or tomorrow. Band members are meeting with the band director to discuss the accident and whether they'll participate in a Tuesday competition at Brigham Young University. The meeting will be followed by a memorial for Christensen. % |
