“Mr. Gorbachev: Tear Down This Wall!”

As Rob noted yesterday, Barack Obama will apparently be “too busy” to attend ceremonies celebrating the fall of the Berlin Wall. Funny! Candidate Obama made speeches in Germany, posed in front of 10 Downing Street and recently flew to Copenhagen at the drop of a hat to try to strengthen Chicago’s bid for the Olympics, but when one of our allies actually invites him to participate in the commemoration of the historic event that symbolizes the ending of the Cold War, Obama has only a cold shoulder for Angela Merkel!

I wonder, aside from Obama’s coziness with leftist dictators, if he would have had to say something complimentary about Ronald Reagan, to the dismay of his nutwing base (some of whom childishly call the great man “Raygun” to this day)?

Or is it simply Obama’s disdain for democratic societies and their achievements that puts him off so?

Rick Richman  writes:

If he cannot bring himself to see the importance of this issue on the merits, perhaps his political advisers will consider the optics of his ending his first year in office with (1) a trip to Copenhagen on behalf of his hometown, (2) a trip to Oslo to pick up a prize he admits he does not deserve, and (3) a failure to take a trip to Berlin to help celebrate his country’s historic accomplishment. History will notice his absence, and the electorate may as well.

It would be an embarrassment for this country to have the purported Leader of the Free World conspicuous in his absence from the commemoration of the tearing down of the Berlin Wall.

Mr. Obama: Get your ass in gear!
