Lawyer: `Confession' in fatal beating was jumbledOct 27 2009 10:51AM
Associated Press By BEN LEUBSDORF Associated Press Writer PONTIAC, Mich. (AP) A defense attorney says a "jumbled" police interview elicited an apparent confession from a Michigan teenager accused of helping beat a homeless man to death. Lawyer Marsha Kosmatka on Tuesday attacked the validity of what prosecutors describe as a confession by then-14-year-old Dontez Tillman during an interview with a Pontiac police detective. Tillman, now 15, is charged with felony murder in the death of 61-year-old Wilford Hamilton, who died after he was beaten in August 2008 in Pontiac. Thomas McCloud, also 15, is charged in the deaths of Hamilton and another homeless man, 61-year-old Lee Hoffman. The teens are charged as adults and face life in prison if convicted. Two juries, one for each defendant, will decide the case. (Copyright 2009 by The Associated Press. All Rights Reserved.) APNP 10-27-09 1045CDT |
