Guinea's military arrests 10 on hunger strikeOct 29 2009 10:44AM
Associated Press CONAKRY, Guinea (AP) A Guinean activist says the military has arrested 10 demonstrators who were on a hunger strike to protest last month's massacre. Ousmane Bah, who escaped the arrest by hiding, said Thursday that the young union members were driven away in a truck Wednesday. Bah says it is not known where they were taken. Wednesday marked the one-month anniversary of a pro-democracy rally where soldiers opened fire on 50,000 protesters and raped women in broad daylight. A Guinean human rights group says 157 people were killed and more than 1,200 wounded. The government has put the death toll at 57. On Wednesday, tens of thousands took part in a general strike in the West African nation. Dozens said they were embarking on a hunger strike. (Copyright 2009 by The Associated Press.
