ND ELCA churchs struggling with clergy policyOct 31 2009 2:07PM
Associated Press Bishop Mark Narum heads 192 congregations that make up the Western North Dakota ELCA Synod. He says the conversations have been open, and some congregations are wrestling with the issue. Narum says Oak Valley Lutheran in Velva voted to stay in the ELCA and other congregations are discussing it. Fargo's largest congregation in the ELCA, Hope Lutheran Church, has a letter on its web site that says it's suspending its funding to the national ELCA. Church leaders emphasize it's up to individual congregations whether they want gay or lesbian pastors, under the new policy. Narum said congregations can disagree with it and still be part of the church. He says he's proud that the church is willing to wrestle with such issues.
