Associated Press FORT HOOD-MINNESOTA Fort Hood victims include St. Paul soldier ST. PAUL, Minn. (AP) A Minnesota soldier is among those killed in the shooting rampage at Fort Hood. Kham Xiong, of St. Paul, died in the attack Thursday, said Tim McGowan, principal of Community of Peace Academy, a school attended by Xiong. McGowan said Xiong's father, Chor Xiong, informed the school of his son's death. Family members picked up pictures of Xiong on Friday for a memorial service, McGowan said. A telephone listing for Chor Xiong couldn't immediately be found. The Department of Defense did not announce Xiong's death on Friday, but a congressional staffer said delegation members had been advised of the death. The staffer asked not to be identified because the information had not yet been publicly released. Xiong graduated from Community of Peace in 2004, McGowan said. TEACHER KAYAKER MISSING Body of missing Lake Superior kayaker found Duluth, Minn. (AP) Authorities say a body found Thursday afternoon on the north shore of Lake Superior was that of a missing missing kayaker and former Milwaukee school teacher. Lake County Sheriff Carey Johnson says Friday that the medical examiner confirms the body is that of 48-year-old Douglas R. Winter. The official cause of death has not been determined. The body was recovered just north of Two Harbors in the Flood Bay area, roughly where searchers expected to find it given the wave patterns of the past few weeks. Winter was last heard from about 8:40 p.m. on Oct. 19, when he called a friend to say he was two to three miles from shore and the waves were getting bigger. His kayak washed ashore Oct. 20 in the Beaver Bay area. (AP) Winona County prosecutors plan to convene a new grand jury against James Raymond Bolstad, a week after a judge dismissed his indictment for his alleged role in a murder 24 years ago. Judge Jeff Thompson says "errors" by the prosecutor's office raised questions about the impartiality of the grand jury. The 63-year-old Bolstad had been indicted in the 1985 murder of Ada Senenfelder. Thompson says prosecutors introduced inadmissible evidence that unfairly prejudiced the grand jury. Prosecutors say Bolstad orchestrated violence against Senenfelder from jail, where he was held on a probation violation after Senenfelder accused him of sexually assaulting her daughter. A prosecutor says his office has enough information to make a new indictment highly likely. Judge Jay Quam is trying to determine whether to require Hecker to pay $7,500 a month to his wife of 15 years, Tamitha Hecker, the mother of their two children, 14 and 8. After reviewing Hecker's submissions, Quam is now ordering Hecker to submit sworn and detailed testimony about his financial status. Hecker claims he doesn't have the means to pay the money even if the judge ordered him to do so, so last month the judge ordered him to submit a detailed accounting of his finances. Quam says Hecker claims to have received $230,000 since his bankruptcy filing, but when it comes to how it was spent, Hecker's "response is better than nonexistent, but not by much." Information from: Star Tribune, http://www.startribune.com FRANK-BACHMANN Frank takes dig at colleague in health care debate Washington (AP) Democratic Rep. Barney Frank took a dig Friday at the Republican lawmaker who organized a protest by conservatives against health care legislation. Frank, a Massachusetts liberal, told an audience: "Some of the people (at the rally) that wanted to engage me in conversation appeared to have been the losers in the 'Are you smarter than Michele Bachmann contest?"' Rep. Bachmann, R-Minn., had organized Thursday's rally attended by thousands of conservatives critical of the Democrats' health care plan. Her spokeswoman did not respond to requests for comment. Frank, who recently compared arguing with an angry voter to conversing with a dining room table, said this week's protest was like being trapped inside a furniture warehouse. PAWLENTY-MEXICO Pawlenty postpones Mexico trade trip ST. PAUL, Minn. (AP) Gov. Tim Pawlenty is postponing a brief trade trip to Mexico, saying that President Felipe Calderon has a scheduling conflict. The Republican governor was due to leave Sunday. Spokesman Brian McClung couldn't immediately say when the trip would be rescheduled. He says the state's trade office will work with the Mexican government to find another time. The trip was to include a private meeting with Calderon on Monday and gatherings with business leaders. The focus was on promoting economic ties between Minnesota and Mexico, one of the state's largest trading partners. Pawlenty has yet to visit Mexico in his official capacity as governor. He hosted former President Vicente Fox on an official visit to Minnesota in 2004. LOUNGE CHAIR-DRUNK DRIVING Minn.'s 'DWI chair' sells for more than $10,000 DULUTH, Minn. (AP) Operating a motorized recliner while drunk apparently drives up the chair's value. Police in northern Minnesota listed the "DWI chair" on ebay after the owner was arrested for driving it into a parked car last year. It sold Thursday for $10,099.99. Proctor Police Chief Walter Wobig didn't immediately know the winning bidder's name or hometown. He says international media attention helped fuel the bidding. The chair was built by Dennis LeRoy Anderson. He had pleaded guilty to driving the motorized chair with a blood-alcohol level nearly four times the legal limit. Anderson says he expected the chair would fetch only $2,000 to $3,000. The recliner is powered by a lawnmower engine. It comes equipped with a stereo, cup holders and lights.
