Associated Press FORCED CHEMO Minn. teen who fled chemo undergoes final session MINNEAPOLIS (AP) A Minnesota teen who fled the state to avoid chemotherapy has completed his last cancer treatment. Thirteen-year-old Daniel Hauser of Sleepy Eye underwent his final radiation session Friday morning. The family says he is now cancer-free. Daniel gained national attention when he fled the state earlier this year, saying he opposed treatment on religious grounds. But after he came back, he went through chemo to treat his Hodgkin's lymphoma, then started radiation therapy. Family spokesman Dan Zwakman says everything is going as planned. A Brown County judge has said he'd like a written report from Brown County Family Services and from the doctor treating Daniel once the boy is done with radiation. If everything looks good, the case will likely be closed. Information from: KSTP-TV, http://www.kstp.com ST PAUL SHOOTING-SENTENCE Man convicted of fatal shooting outside Minn. bar ST. PAUL, Minn. (AP) A man accused of shooting and killing another man outside a St. Paul bar last year has been found guilty. A Ramsey County jury returned its verdict Saturday against 33-year-old Audie Matthews. The jury convicted Matthews of first- and second-degree murder. He stared silently ahead and declined to address the court. Defense attorney John Riemer says Matthews still maintains his innocence. The case will be automatically appealed to the state Supreme Court. Witnesses said Blaine Christofferson was robbed at gunpoint in March 2008 and shot when he tried to run. The robber approached him after he went down and shot him again. Police dogs led investigators to Matthews. Detectives say they found items along the way linking him to the crime. (AP) A South Dakota woman was killed Friday night in a one-vehicle crash south of Beaver Creek. The Rock County sheriff's department says 17-year-old Tina Sandbulte of Garretson, S.D., lost control of her vehicle at the intersection of 61st Street and 80th Avenue, causing it to roll. Sandbulte was thrown from the vehicle and died at the scene. TEEN HUNTER SHOT Teen boy shot in leg during Minn. deer hunt SPRING HILL, Minn. (AP) Authorities in Stearns County say a 14-year-old boy has been shot in the leg while hunting with a group. The sheriff's office says the Melrose boy was shot Saturday about noon while hunting with his father and 12 other men. Deputies say the group flushed out a deer and four men fired at it. One slug hit the boy in the left thigh. The teen is expected to be hospitalized overnight. Spring Hill is in central Minnesota, about 40 miles west of St. Cloud. DOG KENNEL Large Minnesota kennel to auction dogs, shut down LITTLE FALLS, Minn. (AP) A Minnesota dog breeder whose kennel application sparked protests and a lawsuit may be going out of business. Gary McDuffee opened his kennel in Little Falls in 2007 after receiving a permit to have up to 500 dogs. He is registered to sell up to 135 dogs Saturday at an auction in Missouri and has plans to auction more in December and February. A Southwest Auction Service posting on the Internet says McDuffee is going out of business. But animal rights activists, including Wade Hanson of the Animal Humane Society, say they fear McDuffee is not going out of business but trying to rid himself of older dogs. The 56-year-old McDuffee declined to comment. His contact for the auction, Missouri breeder Caryl Freeman, says she assumes McDuffee is retiring. Information from: Star Tribune, http://www.startribune.com FSA ELECTIONS Farm Service Agency county elections begin in MN ST. PAUL, Minn. (AP) The USDA Farm Service Agency's county committee elections are under way. Linda Hennen, the FSA's executive director for Minnesota, says ballots are being mailed to eligible voters. The deadline to return ballots to local FSA offices is Dec. 7. Hennen says the FSA county committee system is unique among government agencies, because it allows producers to make important decisions concerning the local administration of federal farm programs. Committee members make decisions on disaster and conservation payments, establishment of allotments and yields, producer appeals, employing FSA county executive directors and other local issues. To be an eligible voter, farmers and ranchers must participate or cooperate in FSA programs. VENISON DONATIONS Got deer? Minn. food shelves looking for donations ST. PAUL, Minn. (AP) Minnesota food shelves are eager for donations as the firearms deer hunting season opens on Saturday. They're happy to take venison. A state venison donation program accepts whole deer carcasses, complete with the hide and registration tag. Donated deer must show no signs of illness, decomposition or contamination. Newell Searle of Second Harvest Heartland says demand at food shelves is up 50 percent since the recession set in last year. Donations are up, too, but not enough to match the demand. State Rep. Rick Hansen pushed legislation two years ago to relieve hunters of paying to process donated deer. The Democrat from South St. Paul says the program makes it easy for hunters to help the hungry.
