Alonso scores twice as Spain beats Argentina 21Nov 14 2009 4:34PM
Associated Press AP Photo VC117, PW109 By PAUL LOGOTHETIS AP Sports Writer MADRID (AP) Xabi Alonso scored twice to lead European champion Spain over Argentina 2-1 Saturday night in a matchup of teams that figure to be among the most-watched at next year's World Cup. Alonso scored on a rebound in the 16th minute after goalkeeper Sergio Romero saved David Silva's angled shot. Lionel Messi tied it with a penalty kick in the 61st after Maxi Rodriguez stole the ball from Raul Albiol, who slid into him from behind as he closed on goal. Martin Demichelis was called for a hand ball in the area in the 85th minute, and Alonso sent the spot kick into the top of the goal. Dimechelis had a chance to equalize in the closing moments but put a header over the goal with only substitute goalkeeper Pepe Reina to beat. (Copyright 2009 by The Associated Press.
