UC Santa Cruz remain barricaded after Berkeley arrests...Nov 21 2009 1:52AM
Associated Press BERKELEY, Calif. (AP) Students at the University of California, Santa Cruz, aren't ceding any ground in their protests against fee hikes and budget cuts after 41 demonstrators were arrested at UC Berkeley. The Berkeley protesters had barricaded themselves inside a campus building for 14 hours to rally against a 32 percent increase in student fees and job and program cuts. Forty-one people, including university students, were arrested on suspicion of trespassing, cited and released. In Santa Cruz, provost David Kliger says a group of students is blocking exits at the university's main administrative building. Kliger says he won't consider their demands until they clear the obstructions. Regents say they had to raise fees because the cash-strapped state government can't meet the university's funding needs. % |
