Souris River feeling drought effectsDec 13 2006 10:21AM
Associated Press The Minot Country Club and the Souris Valley Golf Course both get water from the river for irrigation. But both had to cut back over the summer. Rick Hair is Minot's river manager. He says the river flow in the area is down to zero right now, and it's been that way all year. It's also taking a toll on area wildlife refuges. Duane Anderson works at the Upper Souris National Wildlife Refuge. He says the area needs a substantial amount of water. The low water level at the Des Lacs National Wildlife Refuge has exposed mud flats. Refuge manager Dan Severson says the refuge is about two feet lower than it's been over the last decade. Severson is still hoping the lakes will be replenished next spring. (Copyright 2006 by The Associated Press. All Rights Reserved.) APNP 12-13-06 1014CST |
