Major Break in 1999 Investigation

A Mom is arrested for murdering her newborn son... Eight years ago... In November 1999 a rancher near Mandaree found a baby's body in a suitcase.

It was in a ditch.

And today seven years later a Garrison woman is charged with murder.

Donnell Preskey has the story...

(Donnell Preskey) For years all authorities had to make a case was a babies body, a blanket and a suitcase..

Eight years after giving birth to that baby Dana Deegan is charged in Federal Court with her sons death

U-S Attorney Drew Wrigley says D-N-A connected Deegan to the baby

(Drew Wrigley / U.S. Attorney) "There did come a time though in that investigation where it did grow cold. Only because of significant technological advances were we able to move forward." FBI agents interviewed Deegan Wednesday

According to court papers Deegan told investigators she had the baby at home in October 1998..

(Wrigley) "This is was, we allege, a mom who understood what was required of her at the moment, the baby was cleaned, clothed..." But then she left the baby was alone for two weeks..

(Wrigley) "We believe what the consequences would be, this babys death was forseeable, obviously we believe her actions were intentional and the murder was intentional." The affidavit says when she returned she put her baby in this suitcase and dumped it in a ditch near Mandaree

But Why???? The same records say she told investigators she was not able to care for another child she already had three

The baby lived a short life but it did get the proper sending off by other parents

The rancher who found the suitcase 13 months after being dumped off adopted and named the baby

People who never knew Baby Moses prayed, cried and buried Dana Deegan's son

In Bismarck, Donnell Preskey, KX News.

Deegan was arrested this morning at her job in New Town.

She works in a program that tracks the educational progress of young children. She made her first court appearance this afternoon.

Deegan is currently being held in the Burleigh County jail.

She will have another hearing next week to determine if she should remain in custody and if there's enough evidence to be charged.

If convicted, Deegan faces life in prison. watch the video | save this article / add to your favorites list

Posted by Me on May 18 2007 2:03PM - She made a mistake! you think she dont feel bad enough having to carry this burden! you dont know what the reason behind this was! i dont know what makes you think YOU know what the best punishment is.........

Posted by c.c on May 18 2007 3:46PM - This woman needs to be locked up for the rest of her life.
hope she burns in hell for killing a baby.
no we don't know why she did it but it was wrong so she needs to be put away so she can't hurt anyone ever again.
this was not a mistake my god she is a baby killer and I hope she never finds any peace ever.

Posted by cat on May 18 2007 11:31PM - This is not a MISTAKE. This woman chose to leave this baby and when it died she did not call the authorities for help, she hid the baby. This baby has been sentenced to death by his mother...she deserves to be locked up for life.
People who love their children do not do horrific, abusive acts to their children. They do everything to provide for them and protect them. No one will ever convince me she just made a mistake.

Posted by JT on May 19 2007 12:45AM - To Posted by ME. Why would you defend this person. She made a mistake???? What are you out of of your mind. This is a human life That couldn't fend for themself. How could anyone do such a terrible deed. If she didn't want the baby. She could have put it up for adoption. What she did is INSANE! This give me chills down my spine what she did. Lock her up. Before she harms any other children.

Posted by Jammie MetzgerKibbe on May 19 2007 9:48AM - The fact that she decided that she could not care for the baby and then left for two weeks to wait for the baby to die in her house and THEN comeback and "clean up" her mess and drop it by the side of the road is NOT and accident!

Posted by GOOD PARENT on May 21 2007 6:30PM - Jammie well said!!! This just wasn't a mistake, Dana Deegan IS A MISTAKE OF A WOMAN!!! She kills her child, a helpless, tink soul left for dead! What kind of a woman could do such things!!!! AS for POSTED: ME What burden, she was working as a person who gives chldren's toys and stuff to parents and TRIED to give them talks on how to raise their children. Yet, she did all of this with a smile and giggles!!!! NO I DON'T THINK SHE THOUGHT OF ANYTHING ABOUT HER BABY!!!! She threw him away like he trash!!! So if you want to defend this woman, go ahead, but we know what kind of woman this is!!!! SHE AIN'T NO MOTHER!!!!!!!!
ENOUGH SAID!!

Posted by K-New Town on May 22 2007 2:45PM - Umm... Dana is my auntie and her daughter is in my grade and classroom with me every day!!! I really hope that one of her daughter's dont come on this page and read all these CRUEL comments that YOU PEOPLE have wrote!!! Dana is not a MONSTER you people are for judging her before you even know her!!! Everybody makes Mistakes and NOBODY is perfect at least that is what i was tought. But i agree she needs to be put away but not for the rest of her life tho. Because i think all these years of REGRET is enough for her and feeling haunted by what she did. So all i wanna say is God Bless Karcen, Ky, and Sidney for what they have to live with the rest of there lives.

Posted by Appaled on May 24 2007 12:22PM - It baffles me how some of you people call her act of murder a mistake. As someone else posted, a mistake is forgetting to buckle her child in, or hitting another kid while driving - something along those lines. Manslaughter is what that would be considered. She MURDERED HER CHILD! SHE THOUGHT IT OUT! THAT IS NOT A MISTAKE! THAT IS A MURDER! You people must be just as sick as she is. Or just plain ignorant. Which is more likely the case.
