Minot Woman Makes Interesting Discovery in Her Frozen MealJun 13 2007 11:05PM
KXMCTV Minot Yesterday, Becky Gulbranson sat down to dinner with her family and began eating what she believed to be a chicken breast. However, she quickly noticed something strange about the piece of meat... (Becky Gulbranson, Minot) "My boyfriend was like, 'Are you okay? What's wrong?' And I showed himthis is a vertabrae. And then I was pointing and showing him. Then I got to the top of the spinal column, and there was a big bump, but it was full of the breading. So I realized it was the head, and I got sick, and I ran upstairs." She later contacted Banquet Foods, owned by parent company ConAgra. She says the representative there offered her four coupons, which Becky quickly rejected. Then, the company said they would send two representatives from their office in Omaha, Nebraska to collect the bird, but never called back. She says their story changed again today. When she called this afternoon, the representative told her they would send individuals in the area contracted through the company to collect the bird. Becky then contacted an official with the North Dakota State Department of Health, who encouraged her to contact the USDA, the organization responsible for inspecting the meat... (Becky) "I want some answers. How did this happen? How could this happen? There's no way that something like that should pass by someone's eye." At this point, Becky says she's still waiting for a call back from local USDA officials.

WHAT'S WITH THIS COMPANY?
Sure ConAgra has had recalls, and I don't support them but I feel it's prudent to point out that they're a huge company and probably less than 0.1% of their products are recalled - they're probably hitting their six sigma goals, which is really the best anyone can hope for. No company is perfect, and for such a minor mistake as this which posed no threat to health, it's only in our over-litigious country that a lawsuit would be filed.
If I'm eating a piece of prepared chicken and get some chewy piece of cartilage / connective tissue, I spit it out, and I don't call the media. It's not a piece of chicken I'd like to have in my meal, but when you're eating an animal, that's part of the deal.
Sure, getting a chicken spine (and possibly a head, though it doesn't look like it to me) may gross you out if that's how you feel, but if you're that uncomfortable about it you probably shouldn't be eating animals.
Swanson may or may not sell whole muscle chicken, but I do know they sell formed patties/nuggets (what you refer to as compressed scraps of meat). In fact, the majority of nuggets and tenders sold today are just that, however, the product this lady bought was not. It is a variety pack of cut chicken pieces.
And by the way, the Hebrew Beef hot dogs you recommend, are made by the same company that makes Banquet.
Did I just hear an endorsement for one packaged, microwavable, meal over another?
We're doomed.
(Psst. . . Cap'n Crunch wasn't a real cap'n! But if he was, he'd be crunchy, much like the chicken's beak I would've nibbled on.)
Please. What would a lawsuit be about? "Your Honor, I bought a piece of chicken, and I got a piece of chicken!" Quit eating Ramen noodles straight out of the package, and cook a meal! If not, you get what you pay for.
Frivolous lawsuits raise prices for all consumers.
Just look at healthcare. (Thanks, John Edwards!)(but that's another issue)
Back to topic: I'd thank the Lord if the worst thing that happened to me this week was a little head.
