Obama says he supports civil unions

Eds: APNewsNow.

By CHARLES BABINGTON Associated Press Writer LAKE FOREST, Calif. (AP) Democratic presidential candidate Barack Obama has reaffirmed his stance that marriage is "the union between a man and a woman," although he supports civil unions for gay partners.

Obama said Saturday he would not support a constitutional amendment banning gay marriage because the issue is one for state governments to handle. He said gay partners should be given rights such as visiting one another in hospitals.

He made the comments as the first guest in a two-hour forum on faith hosted by the minister Rick Warren at his megachurch in Orange County, Calif. Republican John McCain was scheduled to speak with Warren for the second hour, after shaking hands with Obama during the switch.

Posted by Proud Veteran on Aug 17 2008 5:29PM - How long will it be before we have gay marriage in this country?
Look at all the people that worked and payed in Social Security. If gay marriage is law, will this allow the gay marriage partner to draw social security benefits from the other partner.

This will bankrupt social security. Will pensions have to give the gay marriage partner equal status for benefits?? Will this increase the chance of pension programs going broke for giving benefits to those not being intended for??

Look at all the people that did manual labor and only have Social Security to finance whatever retirement they will ever have. Making gay marriage equal to traditional marriage will result in disorder in the retirement systems.

It is easy to tear something apart when you did not build it!

Posted by f_16falcon on Aug 20 2008 1:25AM - Same thing would happen if immigration reform were to *finally* be passed. Either way, Social security is screwed in 20 years anyway, so what's the big deal?

I'm as straight as an arrow, but I also understand that human beings need to be treated with understanding, no matter if they share the same views as us or not. If a partner wants to visit the other in the emergency room/hospital, I think it's out of human nature just to let them. It's American. And, though you probably would never admit it "Proud Veteran", its what you fought for... for people to think and do as they please, even if its something we dont agree with.

So bottom line, SS will be bankrupt without them on the rolls either way. Get use to it.

Posted by damndilettante on Aug 22 2008 7:16AM - As a closeted gay man who married a woman as soon as I turned 18 and became a conservative christian spewing hateful homophobic rhetoric in a sad attempt to run away from my true feelings, I disagree with Sen. Obama. It's Adam and Eve, not Adam and Steve!!!

Posted by nikkigoolden on Aug 22 2008 12:46PM - Civil Union marriages between a man and a woman was established for several reasons; the start of families and all that comes along with it. If we allow the state to state decided on gay marriage this may lead to the foundation of the family to decrease. It is already a task to keep marriages together. It's hard to believe that when you have two of the same sex as partner's, where's the future in that? No children bilogically only thru adoption...if people chose to live that life style, it is totally different than the civil relationships, so therefore eventhough I will vote for Obama, I disagree with him as far as allowing gays to marry. There is no future in that, we as a nation will suffer even more.

Posted by sheilanagig on Aug 28 2008 2:27PM - I don't really see what difference it will make. It won't threaten people who were heterosexual in the first place, and it would not change the legal system already in place. It's a legal agreement between two people, not a religious sacrament. Religion can carry on with their sacraments as they wish, and legal agreements can be entered into without disturbing that practice. The same kind of effect would be produced by one adult adopting another for purposes of inheritance, and that has been going on for a long time. It's just changing the title it goes under.

Posted by lonewolvie on Sep 1 2008 9:55PM - Do people who engage in these strange behaviors deserve the same rights as man and woman in a marraige? I am tired of that worn out "it's a genetic disorder" excuse for this. This is a behavior choice that people make plain and simple. Why is this behavior so closly tied to liberalism? When have we even been given a "genetic" excuse for someone who does good things? Also these same sex unions are dangerous for children to live in. Research and experience has proven that children who are raised by a mother and a father in a functioning family turn out to be much better children.
