NEW MOSQUITO-ENCEPHALITIS NEW: Report: Minn. has new disease-carrying mosquito ST. PAUL, Minn. (AP) There's another reason for Minnesotans to rid their property of water-holding containers, including old tires, buckets and cans.

It's the Japanese rock pool mosquito, which the state Health Department says on Monday can transmit the LaCrosse encephalitis virus and West Nile virus to humans.

The mosquito was accidentally imported into the United States several years ago and has been spreading ever since. It's now established in five southeastern Minnesota counties.

This spring it was determined that its eggs can survive a Minnesota winter.

Health Department expert David Neitzel says the Japanese rock pool mosquito is only one of several species of disease-carrying mosquitoes that breed in water-holding containers.

ASH BORER NEW: Survey finds 59 trees in St. Paul with ash borer ST. PAUL, Minn. (AP) A new survey finds 59 trees infested by the emerald ash borer within a half-mile of the original infestation site in St. Paul.

A spokesman for the Minnesota Department of Agriculture says that's fewer trees than once feared, particularly since there were hundreds of trees in the 2-mile search radius.

The department says 29 of the trees are on public land, and the City of St. Paul will begin removing them this week. The other 30 trees are on private property.

The director of the Agriculture Department's plant protection division says it's encouraging that the infestation apparently hasn't spread more widely.

The Ag Department and St. Paul officials believe the best approach now is to quickly remove the infested trees and monitor nearby ash trees for signs of infestation.

BUS SHOOTING NEW: 2 shot, wounded on Mpls bus MINNEAPOLIS (AP) Authorities say two people were injured Monday when they were shot while riding on a Metro Transit bus.

The shooting happened at the intersection of E. 15th St. and Chicago Ave. about 9 p.m. Authorities say a person argued with other passengers, got off the bus, then fired a gun toward the bus hitting two passengers.

One victim was shot in the arm and the other was grazed by a bullet. Their injuries were not life-threatening.

Metro Transit spokesman Bob Gibbons says police arrested the suspect and found the weapon.

RNC-SANDBAG DROP NEW: Man admits to dropping sandbag during RNC ST. PAUL, Minn. (AP) A Milwaukee man has admitted to throwing a 50-pound sandbag from an overpass onto Interstate 94 during the Republican National Convention in St. Paul.

Twenty-four-year-old David Terence Mahoney pleaded guilty Monday to second-degree felony assault. Under a plea deal, he will serve up to 90 days in jail. He'll be sentenced July 9.

Mahoney had been facing five counts of second degree assault and five counts of terroristic threats for dropping the sandbag onto a route where delegate buses were traveling last September.

The sandbag Mahoney threw didn't hit a vehicle. The criminal complaint says he was directing fellow protesters to throw another sandbag when the group was chased by a patrol car driven by Ramsey County Sheriff Bob Fletcher.

(AP) Planned Parenthood Minnesota, North Dakota and South Dakota will get more security after the fatal shooting of a Kansas doctor who performed late-term abortions.

Planned Parenthood spokeswoman Kathi Di Nicola is confirming to the St. Paul Pioneer Press that the organization has accepted an offer of more security from the U.S. Marshals Service. She declined to give details.

On Monday, Attorney General Eric Holder ordered increased security for a host of unnamed individuals and facilities in the wake of the weekend slaying Dr. George Tiller.

Deputy Justin Cline of the U.S. Marshals Service in Minneapolis says the service is establishing "protection details," but wouldn't give details about them.

Company founder Irwin Jacobs says Genmar has suffered from a rapid decrease in sales due to the credit crisis and weak economy.

In court filings, Genmar also says banks have reduced available credit.

The company's Chapter 11 petition filed Monday lists assets of $237.5 million and liabilities of $216.5 million. Jacobs says the bankruptcy petition does not include over $400 million in intangible assets.

Jacobs says Genmar's revenues for the year ending June 30 should drop by more than half to about $460 million.

The rest of the boating industry has also suffered from higher Gasoline Prices and the recession. The National Marine Manufacturers Association has said sales of new boats fell 30 percent in 2008 and are expected to drop another 20 percent this year.

Information from: Star Tribune, http://www.startribune.com CHARTER SCHOOL-EMBEZZLEMENT NEW: Former Mpls. charter school executive charged MINNEAPOLIS (AP) Hennepin County prosecutors are accusing a former Minneapolis charter school executive of embezzling nearly $1.4 million from an American Indian school.

They've charged 39-year-old Joel Pourier with eight felony counts of theft by swindle over five years from the Oh Day Aki Heart of the Earth Charter School.

Pourier is being held in the county jail on $25,000 bail. His attorney tells the Star Tribune on Monday that his client is innocent and plans to plead not guilty.

The criminal complaint alleges that the school routinely lacked enough money for field trips, supplies, computer and text books while Pourier was executive director.

The complaint claims the embezzlement and mismanagement finally led to the closing of the school last summer. There were about 220 students enrolled when the school closed.

Information from: Star Tribune, http://www.startribune.com ST CATHERINE UNIVERSITY NEW: St. Catherine becomes a university ST. PAUL, Minn. (AP) After 104 years, the College of St.

Catherine is no more. Now the private school in St. Paul is formally known as St. Catherine University.

Senior Vice President Colleen Hegranes says she hopes the name change on Monday attracts students who might have otherwise overlooked the school.

She says that when people hear the word "college" they think only of bachelor's or an associate degree. St. Catherine's offers more than that.

St. Catherine University's bachelor's programs are open only to women. With a student body of about 5,200, it's the largest Roman Catholic university for women in the country.

The school's associate, masters and doctorate programs are open to male students.

Information from: Minnesota Public Radio News, http://www.mpr.org DWI BREATH CHALLENGE NEW: Settlement reached over Intoxilyzer software MINNEAPOLIS (AP) The state of Minnesota and the company that makes Intoxilyzer machines used to test for suspected drunken driving have reached an agreement over access to software that makes the machines work.

According to the agreement, CMI of Kentucky will make the software available in its "native electronic format" at company headquarters in Owensboro, Ky. The company will also make hard copies of it available in Minnesota.

The state sued for access to the software after some defense attorneys in criminal and civil drunken driving cases asked to see it so they could ensure the Intoxilyzer worked properly. That posed a dilemma for prosecutors because they didn't have the source code, and CMI argued it was a trade secret.

The settlement still needs approval by a federal judge.

BODY FOUND-LAKE BYLLESBY NEW: Sheriff checking after body found in Minn. lake HASTINGS, Minn. (AP) The Dakota County sheriff's office is investigating after an 80-year-old man apparently drowned in Lake Byllesby in southern Dakota County.

Authorities say the victim is Rupert Aloysious Schafer of Randolph Township.

His body was found by a fisherman early Sunday afternoon.

Schafer lived on the lake, and he was found near his pontoon boat and dock along the north shoreline.

While the preliminary cause of death is drowning, the Dakota County coroner's office will do its own investigation to confirm that.

CROP REPORT NEW: Ag officials: Most of Minn. Corn in good condition ST. PAUL, Minn. (AP) Minnesota's corn crop is generally in good condition, though dry weather continued in the central and southern parts of the state.

According to the weekly crop weather report put out Monday by the Minnesota field office of the U.S. Department of Agriculture, corn condition was reported as 2 percent poor, 21 percent fair, 66 percent good and 11 percent excellent.

The report says rain in northwestern Minnesota halted fieldwork for some producers.

Herbicide is being applied to seedlings, but the work was delayed in some areas by strong winds.

Topsoil moisture supplies were rated 19 percent very short, 31 percent short, 42 percent adequate and 8 percent surplus across the state. There were just under six days suitable for field work.

Soybean planting is 89 percent complete and 57 percent emerged, both ahead of last year and the five-year average.
